Does Yeast Extract Contain MSG, an Excitotoxin?

Does yeast extract have MSG?  What exactly is yeast extract?  According to Wikipedia, yeast extract is the common name for various forms of processed yeast products made by extracting the cell contents (removing the cell walls).  They are used as food additives or flavourings, or as nutrients for bacterial culture media. They are often used to create savory flavors and savory taste sensations. Yeast extract, like MSG, often contains free glutamic acid.  Glutamic acid is an excitotoxin.  If you read my prior post on excitotoxins, you are well aware that excitotoxins kill brain neurons and are linked to many neurological diseases.  Diseases in which neurons are killed off include Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's.  If you have no interest in getting any of these diseases then read labels carefully.

Many "natural" foods contain yeast extract.  Products such as Sun Chips and Annie's Cheddar Bunnies are just two of them.  I've also noticed yeast extract and autolyzed yeast extract (another excitotoxin) in some vegetarian meats such as the ground meats and Boca burgers.   Here is the list of ingredients of one of my favorite vegetarian burgers; the Boca Chik'n burger from the Boca website (see link in resources).  This version is made with non GMO soy as noted below.  They have a version with GMO soy???  Why would Boca even make such a product?  Also note that there are corn products.  Corn is likely to be with GMOs unless specified.  I underlined the ingredients likely to have MSG or glutamic acid but there are many other suspicious items such as "natural flavor", "dried yeast", "modified cellulose", and browned in-expeller pressed oleic safflower oil.  Good-bye Boca Burger!
