Each day a person gets about three opportunities to up their nutrition in order to sustain them for that day and carry them through to the next.

Cortisol is a hormone that is absolutely crucial for life. Without it we would not be able to survive. However, when we live in chronic strain, worry, and stress the adrenal glands produce relatively high amounts of cortisol.

The problem with cortisol is that our bodies are not meant to be exposed to these relatively high amounts for long periods of time. However, many people who have stress as an obstacle to cure are experiencing the negative effects of cortisol.

1. High cortisol decreases immunity. Cortisol is a corticosteroid and like prednisone, cortisone, and beclomethasone, it inhibits the actions of white blood cells. Initially, this usually leads to increased susceptibility to infections. Eventually, this may actually lead to long stretches of time without colds because the immune system is so weakened.

While Americans in the nearby city of Detroit face life in third world conditions, unable to even afford running water,  the state of Michigan decided to direct its resources towards cracking down on a small food co-op in Standish for having the utter audacity to provide milk, butter, cream and eggs to people who bought shares in the organic dairy.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) must be so proud of their deeds, after they forced Joe and Brenda Golimbieski, the owners of  Hill High Dairy and Jenny Samuelson, the owner of My Family Co-op, to dump out 248 gallons of milk, to break 100 dozen eggs, and to destroy an undisclosed amount of fresh cream, butter and cheese.

According to a post on the Hill High Dairy page on Facebook, the agents from the MDA stood over the family, watching as the food was destroyed.

100 dozen eggs… Each egg had to be broken. 248 gallons dumped in a sprayer that had to be witnessed by MDA being dumped and sprayed on the field.

The Constitution of the United States

The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) was the military rebellion against Great Britain of Thirteen American Colonies which joined together as the United States of America in July 1776 – leading to the creation of the Constitution of the United States.
The Constitution of the United States of America was signed and adopted on September 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has been amended twenty-seven times since then (the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights).

U.S. Food Prices Rising 367% Faster Than Inflation

I just finished reading this gem from the online media juggernaut Huffington Post - 16 Eco Friendly Products for the Home. They feature outstanding deals like four napkins for $25, a single 15-watt light bulb for $11, four Eco-Dryer Balls for $25, and one re-usable tote bag for $45. Talk about a bargain! 

These days it seems the term "eco-friendly" may as well be synonymous with "ridiculously expensive". Why is it that an eco-friendly version of an existing product has to cost several times more than the already existing version? Perhaps caring about the environment is something that’s reserved for the affluent. A budget-conscious consumer couldn’t possibly have the time nor the means to concern himself with something as trivial as bettering the earth. If they did, the next step would be deciding what their family has to sacrifice in order to indulge this lofty aspiration to make a difference. Hey kids, let’s all skip dinner tonight and instead gather around our newly purchased re-usable tote bag. 

Unfortunately, it seems most people are content paying some company to make a difference, rather than exerting personal effort to make a difference on their own.

Great ideas for getting rid of ants inside and outside the house without using poison. I have successfully used diatomaceous earth for keeping ants out of the house. Just sprinkle some powder where you see them coming in. 

Diatomaceous earth wasn't so successful in the garden. I'm not sure why. Maybe when the powder gets wet it is not as effective. Anyway, the video has several ideas.

Welcome to the wonderful world of surveillance shopping, where the most innocent purchase is documented.
Today I had to run into town to buy some boxes. I really like the U-Haul boxes for storage, because they are all exactly the same size, they’re very sturdy, and they have those nice little handle openings to make stacking things easier.
My usual place wasn’t open so I went to another one that said “Authorized U-Haul Dealer.”  It was also an auto parts store.  I went in and selected my boxes, then took them to the register to pay, something I’d done numerous times at the usual U-Haul store I patronize.
And it went downhill from there.
The gentleman behind the counter tallied it up and as I handed him a $20 bill, he said, “Your name?”
I looked at him, baffled.
He repeated himself, “What’s your name?”
I said, “Why do you ask?”
He said, “I need it to set up your account.”
I replied, “That’s okay, I don’t need an account. I’d just like to purchase these boxes.”
He said, “You have to have an account, that is how our computer system works.”
I said, “Are you telling me that I cannot purchase these boxes unless I give you my name?”
He sighed and stopped just short of rolling his eyes. “I just work here and that is the way we do things, ma’am.”
I told him, “I know it seems like I am being difficult, but I don’t give out personal information. I’m sorry, but I guess I will just have to buy my boxes elsewhere.”
The man behind the counter decided it was okay and he would go ahead and sell me the boxes, despite the limitations of his computer system.  So then he asked me, “What is your phone number?”
“Really?” I asked. “Didn’t we just basically go through this?  This is beginning to sound like that whole ‘Who’s on First’ riff.  I’m not giving you my phone number.”
He couldn’t stop himself, I detected a slight eye-roll this time. I magnanimously let it go because I hoped to leave the store sometime during this particular day.
He proceeded through his nosy computer program and then said, “Now, I really do have to have an answer here – where are you moving to?”
What?  Nope. No way.
I said, “None of your business. None of your computer’s business. Are you taking my money or not? Because either way, I am out that door in about 5 seconds. I’m very sorry to be your most difficult customer of the day, but what part of ‘I do not disclose personal information’ is not clear?”
Without another word, he handed me my change, looking incredibly uncomfortable.  I left wondering, “When did the U-Haul guy become an agent of the de facto government?”

As our regular readers know, we’ve written about coffee and its potential health benefits before. In my opinion, the good things coffee can do for your health greatly outweigh the negatives—if you drink coffee regularly, you should have nothing to worry about. Of course, there are always amendments to that rule—like how much you drink and especially what you put in it—but drinking a few cups of black coffee per day can be a healthy habit.

Now, new research shows there’s another benefit to America’s most popular morning drink—and it’s a pretty big one. A large-scale review indicates that the more coffee a person drinks, the less risk they have of developing type 2 diabetes.

Led by a research team of doctors from the Harvard School of Public Health and published in the European journal Diabetologia, the study showed that increasing coffee consumption by 1.5 cups per day leads to an 11% reduction in type 2 diabetes risk. On the other hand, the less coffee a person drinks, the greater their risk of developing the disease. People who decreased their coffee consumption by one cup per day experienced a 17% increase in risk!

Researchers learned that people with the highest coffee consumption, consuming three or more cups per day, were at the lowest risk for type 2 diabetes, while those at the other end of the spectrum, who consumed less than one cup per day, were 37% more likely to develop the disease.

To come up with the conclusion that daily coffee consumption is related to lower type 2 diabetes risk, researchers looked at three major studies that offered more than 20 years of data. There were more than 123,000 participants tracked in the studies. Of those participants, 7,269 cases of diabetes were documented. Observing data collected every two to four years, the researchers were able to look at how coffee consumption was tied to type 2 diabetes. Only caffeinated coffee lowered riskand in a relatively short period of time, often a maximum of four years.

Of course, a healthy cup of coffee can turn into junk food pretty quickly, so if you decide to boost your daily intake, it’s important to limit your additives. Loading it up with cream, sugar, flavor shots, syrups, and other calorie-laden options can turn your coffee from health food to a decadent, sugary dessert in the blink of an eye. Like eating a piece of cake, creamy, sugary coffee can actually contribute to increased diabetes risk. To get the most from your coffee, keep it black. If you do need to add something, opt for skim milk over cream and low-calorie sweeteners over refined sugars—and do so very sparingly.

Do you remember when SnackWells arrived and the low-fat craze started?

Ah, 1992…the beginning of the onslaught of low-fat and non-fat “food” products. Back then, I believed that I could eat as much low-fat or non-fat “food” as I wanted without having to worry about calories. As a person who has always loved sweets and baked things, it was a dream come true! I remember arguing about it with my mother, who insisted that calories still did matter – and warned me that eating a box of fat-free cookies every day was probably going to make me fat.

She was right, as usual.

The low-fat/no-fat craze is partially responsible for our current weight problem (and a myriad of other health problems) here in America.

The latest leaks from former ex-National Security Administration contractor Edward Snowden aren’t really “leaks” or even revelations…they are more just basic observations on the way things are in society today.
“Everyone is under surveillance now” the Guardian headline begins.
Worse, the people in charge of pushing this agenda say it’s for our own good, you know, for National Security and all.
The US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden has warned that entire populations, rather than just individuals, now live under constant surveillance.
“It’s no longer based on the traditional practice of targeted taps based on some individual suspicion of wrongdoing,” he said. “It covers phone calls, emails, texts, search history, what you buy, who your friends are, where you go, who you love.”
Snowden made his comments in a short video that was played before a debate on the proposition that surveillance today is a euphemism for mass surveillance, in Toronto, Canada. The former US National Security Agency contractor is living in Russia, having been granted temporary asylum there in June 2013.
The video was shown as two of the debaters – the former US National Security Administration director, General Michael Hayden, and the well-known civil liberties lawyer and Harvard law professor, Alan Dershowitz – argued in favour of the debate statement: “Be it resolved state surveillance is a legitimate defence of our freedoms.” [emphasis added]
So it’s “legitimate”…to openly and indiscriminately spy on everyone…all the time…without cause.
By taking away our freedom, they’re actually defending our…freedom?

A new study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives has concluded that the petroleum byproduct Bisphenol A, commonly found in plastic products from food packaging and can linings to water bottles, not only competes for receptor space with reproductive hormones in the body, but it appears that men with higher BPA concentrations in their urine also have lower sperm counts.

Worse, the study said that out of 308 men chosen from the general population, BPA was found in a whopping 98% their urine.

A study reported in the NY Times has revealed that among children up to 19 years of age, type 1 diabetes has increased 21% from 2001 to 2009. For those aged 10 - 19, type 2 diabetes has increased 30% for the same time period. 

The large increase in type 2 diabetes is obviously linked to diet. More processed foods and more carbohydrates consumed equals more incidence of type 2 diabetes. The ADA recommends that those with diabetes eat a diet low in fat and moderate in protein and carbohydrates. This only perpetuates the problem.

According to a report in BBC News, about 20% of the soil in China is contaminated. Cadmium, nickel, and arsenic are the main pollutants. 

Foods grown in China and exported to the U.S. in large amounts include apple juice (70%), mushrooms (43%), and spinach (22%). Dr. Oz reported about the high amount of arsenic in apple juice so this shouldn't be a surprise. Eat organic apples instead of drinking apple juice. Don't buy mushrooms that don't state where they come from because it is likely they come from China. Same with spinach. You could also grow spinach. Spinach is easy to grow in the city and in the country.   

Another large import from China is the fish tilapia.  78% of tilapia consumed in the U.S. comes from China. It may look like a good deal but tilapia is anything but as it contains PCBs and heavy metals. Tilapia is farm raised. There is a rumor that about 50% of tilapia are fed animal feces making them highly susceptible to E. coli and salmonella. Also, because tilapia are farm raised, just like cows, they are given large amounts of antibiotics to keep infections at bay.  You might want to stay away from tilapia and all farm raised fish. Wild caught salmon is still your best choice for fish consumption.

This warm and hearty bean soup is filling, satisfying, and nutritious. 

Hearty Bean Soup

  • 1 lb. legumes - navy, kidney, black, chickpea, and/or split peas
  • 1 16 oz. canned tomatoes
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup celery, chopped
  • 1-2 garlic cloves or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2-1 lb. meat depending on how much you like meat - chicken sausage, chopped chicken or turkey, or vegan meat 
  • salt and pepper to taste
1. Check beans for foreign objects and remove. Wash beans, place in large pot (~6 quarts), cover with water and soak overnight or at least 8 hours. 
2. Drain beans and return to pot. Add all ingredients except meat.  Cover with water (about 10-12 cups) and bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat and simmer 1.5 – 2 hours until beans are tender.  In the meantime, saute meat with olive oil and add to soup. Meat should be added about 1/2 hour before soup is done.  

 Note: You may also use canned beans. If you do, use 2 cans of different varieties.

NYU researchers identified 3,000 types of bacteria on ONLY 80 one-dollar bills collected in New York. The sample of bacteria included but was not limited to acinetobacter species (causes antibiotic-resistant infections), staphylococcus (causes skin infections), e-coli (causes food poisoning), helicobacter pylori (causes gastric ulcers), and corynebactrium diphtheriae (causes diphtheria). Also found was traces of anthrax, and DNA from horses and dogs plus two from white rhino.  

How many times do we go into restaurants to eat or pick up food, pay with cash, and never wash our hands before we eat? I shudder thinking about it. You can either stay out of fast food restaurants (best choice), use a credit or debit card that only you handle and wash frequently, or wash your hands well before you eat.
