On Wednesday, April 14, 2014, Vermont became the first state to pass a law mandating that food and products with genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. The law takes effect July 1, 2016. It would have been better if California got the law passed first since it has a much greater population. Thus the popular saying "What California does, so does the nation." However, a victory is a victory and we'll take it regardless of size. According to Monsanto, the largest producer of genetically modified organisms in food, food that has been genetically modified is safe. This has never been proven through studies. In addition, studies in other countries have proven otherwise. In one study using guinea pigs, those fed with GMO corn produced more and greater tumors than the control group.
