Researchers at UNT Health Science Center have found that testosterone therapy can cause brain damage in Caucasian men with oxidative stress but Mexican American men seem to be protected. Oxidative stress occurs when there are more free radicals in the body than antioxidants. The theory is that the higher levels of endogenous antioxidants in Mexican Americans may act as a line of defense against free radicals.
Men generally take testosterone to increase libido, slow aging, and increase muscle mass and energy. Before taking testosterone, Caucasian men should have their doctors perform tests to gauge oxidative stress, such as homocysteine levels. In addition, it may be wise to increase your supplementation of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day for extra protection.
